Grand Moff Tarkin opens fire on the Yavin Prime gas giant, using the resulting shockwave to annihilate the nearby Rebel base on Yavin IV before they can even attack. Whether the Death Star could actually blow up a gar planet or not is up for debate, but at least this option avoids the 24hr cool-down on the super laser.
