"Three marks, at 210!" "Who cares..." An answer to the question of what would have happened if Gold Squadron's Y-Wings had been able to use their ion cannon turrets to defend themselves during the trench run... This is a remade and higher quality version of my original, much less polished video on this topic, which may be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85aRW... FAQ, technical questions, and canon stuff section: The Y-Wings at Yavin were the single-seat BTL-A4 model, which had no dedicated turret gunner. The twin-ion cannon turret was fired by the pilot, and was usually locked facing forward to give the pilot extra firepower in the frontal arc. The turret, though, could be rotated to other angles and elevations, however, and indeed many pilots would set their turrets to face to the rear to give pursuing fighters a nasty surprise. Given that the plan for destroying the Death Star involved Gold Squadron making the trench run while the other fighters created a distraction, it is logical to suppose that Gold Leader (Jon Vander) would have had his strike group do exactly that. So why didn't this happen? Due to supply shortages and maintenance issues, most of Y-Wings based on Yavin 4 did not have working ion turrets at the time, and the imminent arrival of the Death Star no doubt would have meant such problems could not have been fixed in time, and that the fighters had to launch without being fully functional.
